Spring in Buffalo: A Great Time for Work/Life Balance

Golf

Now that tax season has been over for two weeks and I have had time to unwind, I can finally head outside and enjoy the unexpected exceptionally warm spring weather we are experiencing.  Although the tax department has a busy summer full of work ahead, it will not keep us from our favorite summer activities.  A healthy work/life balance (very important here at Freed) allows me to play golf and basketball more often.

I have already played 5 rounds of golf and am hoping the additional time on the course will give me an edge over my friends… that’s doubtful, but I can hope.  My last round I actually shot very well, it must have been the amazing weather.  I don’t ever remember golfing on May 3 and it being 80 degrees and sunny out.

I am hoping to get two rounds a week in and I don’t know if that would be possible without the support all of the managers and partners for a positive and healthy work/life balance.  I also enjoy playing basketball and in the next month I am going to need to play a lot.  On June 2 and 3 I will be playing in the Buffalo Gus Macker tournament.  For those of you who have not heard of this event it is an outdoor basketball tournament that takes place in downtown Buffalo.  This tournament is a tradition for me, I have been playing in it since I was 11 years old. The last few years the tradition has changed slightly, it went from four young players excited to try and win a trophy to four late 20s early 30s slightly out of shape office workers trying not to get too embarassed by college kids!! Wish us luck.

GUS MACKER TOURNAMENT: Volunteers Needed

Gus Macker

Volunteers are needed for the Police Athletic League’s Gus Macker Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, June 2nd and 3rd of 2012.  Volunteers are needed for registration, concession sales, scorekeeping, and other miscellaneous duties.  The event takes place downtown Buffalo, in and around Niagara Square.

The Police Athletic League of Buffalo is a not-for-profit agency that provides cultural, educational, and recreational programming for youth between the ages of 8 and 18, throughout Western New York.  Proceeds from the Gus Macker Tournament will be used by PAL to deliver these much-needed services to the youths in our community.

All volunteers receive t-shirts, and food vouchers; students may receive volunteer credit for school.

Anyone interested in volunteering for the Gus Macker Tournament may contact Peter Savage at (716) 851-4615, or email wnyvolunteers@gmail.com, to request an application.

A Historic Tour to See What’s New: Buffalo’s Hotel Lafayette

Hotel

Buffalo is an amazing place to live, work and play. One of the most fascinating things about Buffalo is the eclectic and rich culture that both the city and the people possess. Whether it art, music or history, Buffalo, NY has it all, and we are lucky to live in a region that offers so much to do throughout all of the four very beautiful seasons.

Today was an example of something very interesting to do, and why Buffalo is such a cool place to live. During lunch hour I headed out across the street from my Liberty Building office (located at Lafayette Square in downtown Buffalo) for a free tour of the historic Hotel Lafayette, which is currently under a $35 million rehabilitation and renovation for downtown retail, living and event use. The hotel will be converted into 115 one and two bedroom apartments and 34 hotel rooms. Several bars, restaurants and other businesses have signed to occupy the first floor. The renovation is being conducted by well known Buffalo property developer, Rocco Termini, who led the tour this afternoon. Termini mentioned during his tour, that much of the work was due to the successful use of historic tax credits, and by the looks of this article in the Buffalo News, many people agree they make projects like this possible.

As I walked through the building and work space, I marveled at the history inside. Amazing architectural details brought back to life, and a new beginning to downtown. I cannot wait to attend a wedding, after work happy hour or special event in this revitalized space, and love how Buffalo is making what’s old new again, for people of all ages to enjoy.

Take a look at the tour photos I posted on our firm’s Facebook page, and check out how beautiful the space is looking. Only a few short weeks until it opens to the public for some special events, so best of luck for a speedy completion and lots of success in the future!
